Abstrakt     The parasite Toxoplasma gondii is an important pathogen that can cause human ocular toxoplasmosis. Lately, it has been suggested that in the majority of patients ocular toxoplasmosis is the result of a postnatal rather than prenatal (congenital) infection. In this study, 384 patients of both sexes, aged 1 to 80 years, all with suspected ocular toxoplasmosis were evaluated serologically for the presence of Toxoplasma IgG, IgM and IgA antibodies. Among them, 169 (44 %) were Toxoplasma seronegative and 215 (56 %) Toxoplasma seropositive. In the latter group, IgG antibodies only were detected in 199 (92.6 %), IgM antibodies in 16 (7.4 %) (median age 45.4 years), and IgA antibodies in addition to IgG antibodies in 10 of the 16 patients. In view of the fact that specific IgM and/or IgA antibodies detected in most patients with ocular toxoplasmosis are suggestive of postnatal Toxoplasma infection, future preventive strategies in Slovenia should include children and adults at risk of ocular disease due to postnatal infection and should not be confined only to pregnant women.
