Abstrakt     Objective: Slovenian health system has common philosophy for alcoholism treatment, but actual practices depend on real capacities (staff, place, setting) and on. The major aim of this study was to establish differences in the structure of patient population and to compare some characteristics of treatment centers. A special questionnaire was compiled and sent to all six inpatient alcoholism treatment centers in Slovenia. Methods. In the year 1991, all patients from inpatient alcoholism treatment were included in the study (n=973, m=774, f--i99). We compared some characteristics of whole population of treated patients and some differences between treatment centers. Results. The majority of patients are men (79,5%). Average age for men is 40,6 years, and 43,1 years for female. The difference is significant (p<0,01). The majority of male patients come from places with 1001 to 10000 inhabitants, there is significant difference according to the size of place (p<0,01). More than half of patients are married (male 57,9%, female 62,8%). More males than females are single (p<0,01). Patients are accompanied by significant other (for male in 56,0%, for female 45,5%). In addition to alcohol patients are apt to smoke cigarettes (73,8%) and use anxiolitic (21.2%) and analgesic (14,8%) medicine. Comorbid mental disorders were found in 13,3%, there is significant difference between treatment centers (p<0,01). Significant differences between treatment centers were also found in an average duration of treatment (mean duration 72,211,2 days, p<0,01), drop out rate (p<0,01) which was 28,5%, relapse rate (male 7,1%, female 5,1 %) and the use of disulfiram (p<0,01).
