Abstrakt     Genetically modified organisms are the subject of much public discussion in Slovenia, as well as in scientific journal articles internationally. As in many other countries, the pros and cons have been vigorously stated. This year the law on genetically modified organisms (GMO's) was accepted in Slovenia, and the regulations are under preparation. Up to now, no genetically modified plants have been allowed to be planted in Slovenia. In Slovenia we are aware of the complexity of GMO's, therefore the intensive co-operation is established between competent Ministries, inspection services, detection laboratories and scientists to establish efficient network on GMO's. Also non-governmental organisations are included in decision making. Intensive international cooperations are established on governmental, laboratory and non-governmental levels. The traceability of GMO products in the market, as well as possible future field trials, must be assured by the methods introduced for detecting GMO's. There are different institutes working on biotechnology and use molecular biology techniques in their laboratories. At the National Institute of Biology the Laboratory for GMO detection is established. The regulations on labelling food products containing GMO's will come into force in January 2003. Most of the samples tested so far, have come fronrt Slovenian industry, some from non-governmental organisations and some from inspection services. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters)
