Abstrakt     Genetically modified plants are being grown in two laboratories in Slovenia, at the Department of Plant Physiology and Biotechnology, National Institute of Biology (NIB) and the Department of Agronomy, Botechnical Faculty (BF), University of Ljubljana. However, other Slovene research institutions are also involved in projects which include research on genetically modified plants. Good cooperation and research coordination has been achieved between laboratories. The National Institute of Biology started with breeding transgenic potato in 1992, together with the Jožef Stefan Institute and the Laboratory of potato plant physiology and viral diseases; MKŽK. The Scottish Crop Research Institute, Dundee, UK also took part in this extensive research project. This research has resulted in a number of tobacco and potato transgenic lines. While the applied goal - breeding potato plants resistant to Potato virus Yntn - was achieved; these Iines also serve for basic research into plant: virus interactions, aimed at better understanding the mechanisms of resistance and disease development; and the physiology of infected plants. Additionally, transformation of plants for producing pharmaceutically active compounds in cell and hairy root cultures is proceeding at the NIB irx cooperation with Faculty of Pharmacy. Department of Agronomy; BF is involved in developing transgenic onion, to achieve better- nutritional quality; development of methods for hop transformation and uses tobacco plants for basic studies with expression of green fluorescence protein. The Jožef Stefan Institute and NIB ark also connected with Plant Research International, Wageningen, NL in research on the resistance of potato to insects. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters)
