Abstrakt | Biotechnology has a long tradition in Slovenian industry. It was expanded from food industry to other branches such as chemical and pharmaceutical industry, agriculture and environmental protection. We are aware that modern biotechnology including technologies of recombinant DNA and GMO is becoming important for Slovenia as well and may generate new highly competitive products in near future. Several R&D groups at the academy and industry who adopted high level of knowledge and experience in modern biotechnology are definitely the basis for further development towards its industrial application. In industry besides in some small biotech companies the most of R&D potential is concentrated in pharmaceutical industry, - especially in companies Krka and Lek. They are both integrated generic companies producing drugs with expired patent exclusivity with added value on improved quality, own synthesis, new forms and indications. Slovenian pharmaceutical industry is capable to enter to the market of recombinant DNA based products on the egments of research products, generic biotech products and new biotech products. We expect that Slovenia will further support modern biotechnology and to introduce regulatory mechanisms enabling its safe industrial application. | |
