Abstrakt     The recognitions of potential toxicity of surface runoff from highways brought to numerous suggestions of management, prevention and treatment of this pollution before release into final recipient. Slovenia has recently gained net of systems for collection, retention adn treatment of higway run-off: The retention efficiency is undisputed, while the tretament efficiency is often questionable. In the spring of 2001 at a motorway section Arja vas-Celje a retention basin was reconstructed into a pilot vegetated biofilter (YB), to higher the treatment efficiency of run-off. It was designed for a critical flow of 11.75 l/s for 0.75 ha of catchment's area. The whole system consisted of a sedimentation basin covering an area of 36 m2, oil and grease trap, sand filter and a VB covering an area of 85 m2. Performance efficiency of the system was evaluated through preliminary monitoring from summer to autumn 2001. Removal efficiency was 69% for suspended solids, 97% or settlement solids, 51% for COD, 11% for BOD5 and 80% for Fe. Heavy metals such as Cu, Zn, Cd, Ni and Pb were low or below limited level at the inflow with reduction efficiency in the system of over 90% Concentrations of N and P showed a limited level of nutrients for biological processes. Results have shown that the CW system could be an alternative for highway runoff treatment. Further and long-term investigations over all seasons and with all necessary equipment should give more data on their proper design and performance efficiency.
