Abstrakt     The knowledge of algae at Cerkniško polje is fragmentary Most of the data on algae refers to waterbodies, but wetlands were neglected in the past. The results presented in the contribution summarise the data from older sources and recent data up to the year 2000. Different authors identified 300 periphytic species. Among them, green algae are prevalent, followed by diatoms and cyanobacteria. The development of phytoplanktonic communities is usually disturbed by the water-level fluctuations and dry periods. During protracted flooding, many phytoplanktonic species appear but the share of their biomass in the total ecosystem production is negligible in comparison to the macrophyte production. Physical and chemical research into the tributaries and the lake in the last few years revealed occasionally worsened water quality. This is not reflected in phytoplankton species composition. Cyanobacteria and some other indicative species are relatively rare, which indicates an unloaded, oligitrophic ecosystem.
