Abstrakt     Acute pancreatitis is an acute inflammatory disease that occurs in both mild and severe forms. Approximately 80% of patients have a mild process associated with edema in the interstitial pancreatic tissue or peripancreatic tissue. ln these patients, the disease process usually resolves with supportive medical management. The remaining 20% of patients develop a severe, potentionally life-threatening disease characterized by variable amounts of necrosis of the organ and adjacent tissue. These patients are at risk for infection of the necrotic material. In this group surgery to remove the necrotic and infected tissue may be life-saving.
