Abstrakt     The aim of this research was to establish applicability of modified spinal index (MSI) to normally and pathologically changed canal width of entire spine in conventional, CT or MR images. Available discoveries concerning morphometric values of normal and pathological canal width are described as well as spinal descease and canal content influences on the change of these values. As a comparison there is Jones-Thomson spinal index described, applicable only in transversal CT image. MSI is universal in application; statistically highly significant in definition of normal or pathological canal width of entire spine - on frontal, sagittal and transversal planes, using three scanning techniques. Age, sex and race and scanning techniques were of no influence on MSI, which confirms its practicality and applicability in definition of normal and pathological canal width parameters. Prospective study of the first group includes 298 patients with morphometric analysis and caculation of spinal and canal MSI, in three regions, in AP and profiled projections; the second group includes 50 patients in transversal CT image, on L3-5 levels; the third one calculates MSI in sagittal MR image of the entire spine for 20 patients. Correlation of the results obtained by the three scanning techniques statistically highly coincides. It proves that MSI makes it possible to discover and objectivize values of normal and pathological canal width on time and to define morphotypes. This index gives new knowledge about canal width irrespective of the variety of sex or race on all three spinal planes. Application in routine clinical-radiological practice will surely be a stimulus for new researches concerning spine and spinal canal. Simplicity, low price and rate of MSI calculation are adequate for everyday application in clinical and radiological practice.
