Abstrakt		A. Bier (1861-1949) was the first to give spinal anesthesia before surgery on the lower extremities in Kiel. In 1912 he bought 750 ha of degraded forest land in Sauen and recultivated it according to ecological principles. Since 1992 it has been opened to the public as "The August Bier Institute for Ecology and Medicine, Sauen".
