Abstrakt     A primary goal in organ transplantation is the prevention or effective treatment of infection, the most common life-threatening complication of long-term immunosuppressive therapy. There is a broad range of potential sources of infection ranging from latent microorganisms, to pathogens of both community and hospital origin. Recommendations for pretransplant screening for infectious diseases, pretransplant immunization and education and posttransplant prevention, early recongnition of infection, pre-emptive treatment, specific antimicrobial treatment of symptomatic infections and the avoidance of common drug-related toxic effects are described.
