Abstrakt     Inflammatory bowel disease encompasses a number of chronic, relapsing inflammatory disorders involving the gastrointestinal tract, especially ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. Since inflammatory bowel disease is a chronic disease with a frequent, often unpredictable impact on a patient's life, management generally requires much more than the treatment of symptoms. The article describes the crucia! procedures of the family physician in the management of the patient with inflammatory bowel disease: regular office visits, cooperation with a gastroenterologist, a suitable approach in exacerbation of the disease, adequate drug therapy, recognition of complications, arranging sick leave and taking part in the procedure of evaluation of invalidity. Management efforts in inflammatory bowel disease are directed at decreasing or eliminating symptoms, thereby improving the patient's quality of life. Accomplishing these goals requires careful selection of therapeutic agents based on symptom severity and drug side effects. The family physician should atso be familiar with other therapeutic possibilities such as suitable nutrition, adjunctive therapy and surgical procedures. Patient involvement and education are necessary components of effective management. Good communication between patient and physician is of great importance.
