Abstrakt     The author has investigated the womens' perception of abortion use as either an emergency or as fertility regulating method measured by the evidence on the use of more or less effective contraceptive methods within 24 months prior to unpianned conception. The research has aiso explored the factors affecting the use of abortion and the degree of relationships between psycho-social factors and the two behaviourai patterns. The study was designed as cross-sectional with the sampling based upon the inclusion of all the women pregnant up to 10 weeks seeking abortion at the University Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Ljubijana until 102 repeaters were enrolled (overail 473 women). The recruitment took place from March to August 1988. With great certainty it can be stated that only 15.5 per cent of women who had used more effective contraceptives till the pregnancy occurred perceived abortion as an emergency procedure. It is less likely to make the same conclusion for 30.6 per cent of women, who switched from more to less effective contraceptives during a two years' interval, aii the more so as the switch or discontinuation of contraceptive use could not be objectively proved. The other haif of the women (53.9 per cent ) who had used less effective contraceptives during the observed interval seemed to rely on abortion as a fertility regulating method. But such perception was not a consciuos one due to high retention rate and the perception of the good reliability of the methods used. Examining the effects of users' and prolonged investigation. characteristics on behavioural paterns, in the persistent users of more effective contraceptives and those who had discontinued their use great similarities have been found in the level of education, aspiration for better education, number of children and abortions and the perception of the quality of contraceptive councelling.(trunc.)
