Abstrakt		The clinical benefit and cost-effectiveness for routine prophylaxis of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in surgical patients has been well documented, but use of this approach in medical patients remains contraversial. There are no consensus for thromboprophylaxis in critically ill nonsurgical patients, although there is considerable morbidity and mortality caused by VTE in these population. The author describes the risk factors and the approach to prophylaxis of VTE. Low molecular weight heparin is the drug of choice for prophylaxis of VTE in critically ill medical patients.
