Abstrakt     Activities of daily living Functional assessment scales are used in rehabilitation practice and research as important diagnostic, prognostic and outcome measures. The criteria for independence have been performance oriented and conceptualized in the activities of daily living (ADL) approach. The term ADL was first mentioned in 1935 as "assessment of everyday activities". The actual term "activities of daily living" was first published in 1949. ADL could be divided into two types, namely Basic and Instrumental ADL. Basic ADL refer to the patient's capacity for basic survival in managing basic hygiene, selfcare and mobility while Instrumental ADL refer to tasks beyond caring for oneself and involve interaction with the physical, social and cultural environment. ADL measures are based on two models; the dependence and the functional model of disability. The dependence model assesses the amount of help needed by patients to complete certain basic self - care tasks, while the functional model assesses »how the patient performs certain functional performance". There has been a long tradition of measuring ADL's and there exist a number of well-validated scales. These are the Barthel In dex, the Katz Index, the Nottingham 10 - point ADL scale, the Functional Independence Measure (FIM) etc. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters)
