Abstrakt     The main purpose of rehabilitation medicine is to improve functional abilities of the patient. At the same time, there have been increasing demands for the validation of the efficacy of different therapeutic methods. The efficacy should be evaluated by means of planned, randomised clinical trials. To validate methods used for children with cerebral palsy (CP), a reliable, consistent classification system for children with CP should be used. The Swedish classification system has been used for a long time. However, in /ast few years there have been many reports on the benefits of the Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS). The latter has been translated into Slovene and it has been used at the Institute in clinical practice since June 2001. The evaluation and follow-up of children with CP (or children at risk) should begin soon after the well-known risk factors have been established. It is better to use already developed and validated measurement instruments. Rules on how to transfer these instruments into a different social and cultural environment should be taken into consideration. To our knowledge there are two reliable, validated measurement instruments for the evaluation of functional abilities of children with CP: Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory (PEDI) and The Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM).
