Abstrakt     Information from standardized assessment instruments complemenfs that from the neurological examination in assessing the level of consciousness, the overall extent of neurological impairment, motor function, balance, cognition, speech and language. Standardized instruments also facilitate evaluation of the patient's actual performance of activities such as walking and basic or instrumental activities of daily living. These are a useful adjunct to the clinical interview in assessing depression, and they can help to apply objective measures to the elusive factors of family functioning and quality of life. 1. Measures of Impairment. The National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale and the Canadian Neurological Scale are the most validated among the available instruments. 2. Measures of Disabilitv. The Rankin Scale is the most commonly used global scale and provides a simple broad-based estimate of the amount of dependency resulting from stroke. a. Measures of Disability in Basic Activities of Daily Living. The Barthel Index and the Functional Independence Measure are by far the most commonly used measures. b. Menfal Status Assessment The MiniMental State Examination and the Neurobehavioral Cognition Status Ex amination are recommended. c. Measures of Motor Function and Balance. FughMeyer Scale, Motor Assessment Scale and Motricity Index are the recommended measures for motor function and Berg Balance Scale is recommended for balance. d. Measures of Mobility. The Rivermead Mobility Index is used in siroke patients. Timed functional movements (e.g., time to walk 10 meters or the distance that can be walked in 6 or 9 minutes) should also be considered. e. Assessment of Speech and Language Function. The recommended instruments are Boston Diagnostic Aphasia Examination, Porch Index of Communicative Ability and Western Aphasia Battery.
