Abstrakt     Traumatic brain injury with a complex array of multiple severe deficits significantly affects all aspects of a patient's life. Its consequences are deeply devastating not only for the survivors, but also for their families and the society itself. Physical, mental, emotional and personality-behavioral disturbances with consequent unemployment and social dependence, mean a radical decline of the quality of life and well-being of the patient and his family, and a severe financial burden to the family and society. As a rule, recovery is long-lasting and often incomplete. Carefully planned, goal-oriented multifaceted approach in rehabilitation treatment is essential as well as objective, sensitive and reliable functional assessment for clinical, research and program-evaluation purposes. Changes in functional status require re-evaluation of the state and adaptation of therapeutic goals, programs and strategies. Functional evaluation is important also in terms of planning and organizing medical services, while the assessment of the permanent disabilify is indispensable to the planning of the patient's reintegration into his domestic and working environment once the treat ment has been terminated. Numerous multidimensional assessment tools for functional outcome evaluation are available with little consistency of methodol ogy, purpose or aims. Considering the complexityand multiplicityofbrain injury consequences, most of the assessment methods have certain limitations and deficiencies. The development of the WHO ICIDH classification in the early eighties revealed further possibilities in this respect. Assessment scales for assessing functional outcome after severe TBI are described. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters)
