Abstrakt		In order to choose the most suitable rehabilitation method and to state its efficiency it is necessary to objectively evaluate the status and function of the hand. This is done by a team composed of a doctor, a physiotherapist and an occupational therapist. There are three methods used: questionnaire, interview and observation. Observation is informal if the patient is a passive participant and it can be done even without his or her knowing; it is' formal if expressed by measurement What can be measured? Range of movement (a goniometer is used), oedema (with a volumeter or a tape) and strength (by manual muscular testing and dynamometer). Besides, sensibility (superficial and deep) is examined; if necessary, it could be checked by testing the autonomous nervous system. To evaluate function, functional tests and assessment batteries are used. The patient is observed during testing, and the time needed to fulfill a task is measured. In the Rehabilitation Medical Unit of the University Medical Center of Ljubljana, finger range of motion is represented graphically as well as goniometrically. To assess the rehabilitation outcome, a form is used, consisting of several parts or rubrics: measurements of ROM, strength, sensibility and pain, and a questionnaire on the degree of difficulty in doing some cited activities. A new method enabling a detailed analysis of the patient's ability to perform chosen activities has been introduced recently. It is called AMPS - short for the Assessment of Motor and Process Skills. It has become popular all over the world and is practiced in all five continents. Its use is of great help in our work.
