Abstrakt     The term quality of life (QOL) in its most general sense relates to a broad array of life conditions and circumstances, such as environmental conditions, social surrounding, physical and mental conditions including one's own life perspective. Trying to conceptualize QOL, especially when looking for an appropriate outcome measure for health-related quality of life (HRQOL), researches have come to agreement about two fundamental components of QOL, namely multidimensionalityand subjectivity. The former refers to the need to assess life experience in various aspects, such as physical, functional, emotional or mental and social aspect. The latter refers to the fact that QOL can be understood only from the patient's perspective. The researchers have applied many different instruments to evaluate HRQOL which have proved valid and reliable in non-rehabilitation populations. HRQOL instruments can be differentiated in relation to their questions: questions that are usual enough to be applicable to almost everyone, including those without health condition (generic health status measures) versus questions that are focused on a specific condition, disease or treatment (targeted health status measures). Generic measures differentiate among important dimensions of overall health and functioning while targeted measures differentiate at finer levels, such as intensity of specific symptoms. A general recommendation when assessing HRQOL is to supplement generic measures with targeted measure whenever possible. The most widely used generic HRQOL measures are the Short Form instruments (SF-36, SF-20, SF-36 V2) , the Sickness Impact Profile instruments (SIP 136, SIP 68, SA-SIP 30), the Quality of Well-Being (QWB) Scale and Nottingham Health Profile (NHP).
