Abstrakt     The assessment of quality of life is becoming increasingly common as one of outcome measures on post-stroke rehabilitation. This article briefly considers the basic advantages and limitations of some most widely used generic (or nondisease specific) scales, and a few recently developed specific quality-of-life scales. No scale has been regarded as perfect. When looking for the optimal measurement instrument the demands and expectations should be defined as precisely as possible. In this article, the author's first experiences with the Stroke Adapted Sickness Impact Profile (SA-SIP30) scale are presented. The SA-SIP30 is stroke-specific quality-of-life measure designed as a self-report questionnaire, which includes 30 items specifically adapted for stroke patients to assess 8 domains (Body Care and Movement, Mobility, Ambulation, Social Interaction, Emotional Behaviour, Alertness Behaviour, Communication, and Household Management). It is supposed to capture most of the relevant and meaningful problems within stroke population. The SA-SIP30 data was obtained from 12 post-stroke patients with different clinical pictures and within different after-stroke periods. It turned out to be a simple and feasible method to measure the quality of life, which gives a lot of additional information from the patient's point of view. It was also acceptable to the patients, who had accomplished their questionnaires in 13 minutes on average. The author suggests that the Professional Committee of the Association for the Physical and Aehabilitation Medicine should choose and recommend the most appropriate measure for the assessment of quality of life after stroke, which would be used throughout the country.
