Abstrakt     The work of a nurse in the intensive therapy deprtment is extremely demanding, for she/he must evalutate the needs of the individual for immediate and long - term medical treatment; emotional support and learning anew. The treatment of a polytraumatized patient reqires extensive knowledge, fast thinking, correct judgement and prompt action. After admitting a polytraumatized patient into the intensive therapy department, the nurse works as part of a team. The expression " polytrauma" has been determined as simultaneous injury of different regions of the body. Therefore the preparation of medical care is accompanied by assuring the physiological needs and the need for safety. Most important are the preparation of the emer gency room for the severly injured pacient, the first contact with the patient in the entrance hall of intensive therapy department and the delivery of the patient by the anasthesiological reanimation team to the acceptance team. When determining the necessary medical treatment, the nurse takes into account 14 vital signs, which begin with assesing the patient's physiological needs; whereby we must also consider the psychological, mental, moral and social needs of the patient and his relations. The success of the patient's treatment in the intensive therapy department depends on the team work and on well organized cooperation of all medical fields and experts that participate in the therapy. The organization of the medical treatment may come across such problems as the transportation of information, which may be insufficiently documented and not rarely misplaced. We believe the medical treatment of a polytraumatized patient in the intensive therapy department may be improved by organising the medical care based on the system of primary medical treatment.
