Abstrakt     The aim of the survey was to find out the extent of tobacco, alcohol and illicit drug use among students in the first grade of secondary schools in Ljubljana. A modified methodology based on that of the Pompidou Group and the European School Survey Project on Alcohol and Drugs (ESPAD) was used. The questioning was anonymous, and 1388 students participated. Among other things, the results showed that 19% of the students smoked regularly (at least 1 cigarette per day) and additional 9% occasionally; more than half of the students had been drunk at least once in their lifetime and almost one-fourth indicated heavy drinking in the past month. Seventeen percent of the students had used marijuana at least once, 11% had used inhalants and 7%, sedatives; 0,6% to 3,2% of the students had tried other illicit drugs. The first illicit drug for most of the students was marijuana. It was found that there was a greater possibility of using one type of drug if a person used another type of drug. The proportion of students using drugs differed in relation to sex, type of school, domicile, free-time activities, education of parents and intactness of family.
