Abstrakt     Background. The aim of this study was to fmd out whether parallel to the intensity of chronic cerebral vasospasm on the basilar arteries changes in the central noradrenergic areas of the hypothalamus and brain stem of rabbits could also be ascertained following experimental subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) and exlusion of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS). Methods. Histologic specimens were prepared by perfusion fixation on day 8 after the SAH. The spastic effect of experimentally induced SAH and the effect of three different types of SNS exclusion in New Zealand rabbits were investigated: first, by previously developed methods using the corrugation coefficient (CC) of the vessel intima and lumen reduction coefficient (LRC) of the lumen transsections on precisely defmed locations of the basilar artery (AB) with the aid of computer image analysis; and second, on precisely defined sites of the hypothalamus and brain stem of the same rabbit, by immunohistochemically assessing the amount and localization of dopamine beta-hydroxylase (DBH) with anti-DBH antibody. Results. The results revealed a significantly less corrugated intima and wider luminal transsection of the AB assessed by CC and LRC as well as significantly lower DBH concentration in group A (control group of rabbits with sham SAH), in group C (SAH and alpha-adrenergic blocker phenoxybenzamine), in group D (SAH and cervical gangliectomy), and in group CLO (SAH and alpha2 central adrenergic agonist clonidine), in comparison with group B (rabbits with SAH and without medication) which demonstrated a significantly more intensive accumulation of DBH and, according to the CC and LRC also a more intensive corrugation of the intima and narrower luminal transsection of the AB in comparison with all other groups.
