Abstrakt     So far, virologic diagnosis and monitoring of HCV infection have relied on the use of serologic assays detecting specific antibodies to HCV and assays that can detect and quantify viral genome. Determination of HCV RNA load in serum samples became standard method for assessing HCV replicative activity HCV. This method proved to be clinically important for assessment, management, and antiviral treatment of patients with chronic HCV infection. Recently, a new enzyme immunoassay has been developed for detection and quantification of total HCV core antigen. HCV core antigen is an indirect marker of HCV replication, so total HCV core antigen quantification, as a new diagnostic marker, could replace HCV RNA load quantification in the management of HCV-infected patients. The purpose of our study was to determine utility of total HCV core antigen quantification as effective and more economical surrogate marker of HCV replication compared to quantitative measurement of HCV RNA in serum. The potential utility of total HCV core antigen quantification for monitoring the antiviral therapy in patients with chronic HCV infection was evaluated as well.
