Abstrakt     Many individuals who have had poliomielitis many decades ago, are now complaining of several new problems, predominantly progressive weakening, low muscle endurance and unexplained fatigue in previously affected and unaffected muscles. Those new problems are reported by more than a half of the poliomyelitis survivors and are reason for progressive worsening of their functional status. The aim of the study was to compare the strength and endurance of m. quadriceps femoris in persons after paralitic poliomielitis and healthy subjects. We also compared strength and endurance of same muscles in subjects with and without new symptoms after paralitic poliomyelitis. 30 subjects after paralitic poliomyelitis were included in study. Regarding complaining of new problems, they were divided in two groups (»with new problems« and »without new problems«). The control group of similar number, age, gender and lifestyle was composed of healthy subjects. The standard manual muscle test and isometric dinamometer were used for assesment of the maximal strength of m. quadriceps femoris. The endurance was defined as time in which subject was able to mantain force in m. quadriceps femoris, equivalent to 40 - 45 % of maximal force, as long as possible on isometric dinamometer. The method »tensiomiography« (TMG) was used to measure the endurance of m. rectus femoris. With this method one can measure the radial displacement of the belly of the muscle, during single-twitch or tetanic stimulation. Frequency of the tetanic stimulation during six seconds interval, needed to cause flat response of the muscle was recorded, as well the time in which the flat response of the muscle was caused by the frequency 2 Hz lower than the frequency determined as above.
