Abstrakt     The riparian zone is usually the most fertile and productive part of the landscape. It supports high diversity of organisms colonizing a variety of habitats. But despite high productivity it is very vulnerable due to human impacts, natural stress events and because in some cases it occupies only a small proportion of the landscape limited to land/water interface. The type of vegetation and width of the riparian zone are closely connected with the ecological status of the river ecosystem and indicates its vulnerability. Changes of water quality and quantity revealed that past and current management of riparian zones were not sustainable.
