Abstrakt     The Quality of Life, as a scientific discipline in medical literature, began two decades ago. The primary goal of all forms of therapy is not just prolonging life, but improving the quality of life as well. A holistic approach to health indicates that health is a combination of physical, mental, emotional, social and personal health. The Quality of Service: diagnostics, surgical work and postoperative care are directly related to the quality of life. The ambition of the medical team is to enable the patients to start a "new life". It is a necessary principle in the practice of modern medicine. The goal of this study was to define the quality of life in patients after open-heart surgery. 64 patients from Slovenia were included in the study, and were monitored over four separate periods: before the operation and 3, 6, and 12 months after the operation. The data were compiled based on questionnaires. The second part of the study comparatively analyses the quality of life between Slovenian and Yugoslav patients who have undergone open-heart surgery. The results of determining the quality of life in patients after the surgical procedure are favourable. Statement of opinion: This research paper introduces a new sphere of medical science as well as contributes to and enhances the organisation of social and medical care in Slovenia. It is the first research study of this kind in Slovenia and therefore provides a valuable source of information, giving rise to new ideas for future research and aiming to create the best quality possible in the cardiovascular and other fields of medical science.
