Abstract     The specific encounter of immune cells and antigen leads to the production of growth factors, both by the cells that present the antigen, and by the lymphocytes themselves. These factors are responsible for the rapid expansion and differentiation of initially small number of antigen specific lymphocytes. Described factors have a crucial role in the positive and negative regulation of antigen specific humorat and cellular immune response. The availability of recombinant lymphokines, monoctonal antibodies, directed against individual factors and identification of their receptors have helped to clarify the role of these factors in immune response. Authors describe general characteristics of interleukins and indicate their therapeutic implications.
