Abstract     In the article available mortality and morbidity data together with some estimated data about the prevalence of high risk factors in Slovenia are presented. Age stardandized mortality rate (SMR) data for Slovenia are near to the average SMR in European countries. But the decreasing tendency of SMR-so characteristic for north and west European countries with intensive CVD prevention programmes-has not been the case yet in Slovenia. The improvement of national information system for monitoring of cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a precondition for more effective prevention and control of (CVD). Results of research dealing with the prevalence of risk factors for cardiovascular diseases among adult population of the two geographically different Slovenian regions are presented. In both observed places risk factors (increased cholesterol values, smoking, obesity, blood pressure, alcohol consuming, salt intake, physical inactivity) are frequent, but not everywhere in the same extent. Results of the research can not be generalized for the whole of Slovenia, but they must nevertheless be taken into account for the planning intervention programmes. Risk factors (prevalence, distribution and mean values) for the onset of chronic non-infectious disease (cardiovasculary diseases, diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) that were studied on randomly selected sample (1692 persons) of adult population of Ljubljana during the period from November 1990 to February 1991 in the frame of CINDI 2000 programme are presefor preventive programmes are given. nted. Insufficient activity was ascertained in 2/3 of adult population, fasting plasma glucose above 5,6 mmol/l in 60 per cent of population, obesity in 57 per cent of men and 49 per cent of women and an average value of total cholesterol in samples 5,69 mmonl/l.
