Abstract     Acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding has an incidence ranging from approximately 50 to 150 per 100.000 of the population each year, the incidence being the highest in the areas of the lowest socioeconomic status. The mortality rate ranges between 7 to 14% in the patients admitted to hospital because ob bleeding, and is more than 30% in those who developed gastrointestinal bleeding though hospitalized for other reasons. More deaths occur in elderly patients who have significant comorbidity and majority is invitable, despite improvements in medical and surgical expertise. Endoscopic haemostatic procedures are found to be the therapy of the choice, either as a semi elective procedure in patients who have had relatively minor bleeding, or it is done urgently in patients who have sustained major bleeding. Endoscopy in useful to define the cause of the bleeding, to stop the bleeding with performing haemostatic procedures and as prognostic outcome of bleeding patients.
