Abstract		Before adopting a national strategy for the detection and treatment of dyslipoproteinaemias, serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the Slovene population should be known. For this purpose serum values of total, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol,triglycerides and the atherogenic index have been collected for over 17,000 residents of Ljubljana and its surroundings. The large size of the sample reduced the influence of parameters such as the subjects age, gender and health status on the statistical analysis. Thus the results are a the first approximate indicator of the lipid status of the population. The more reliable lipid status for the population of Ljubljana and its surroundings will be obtained by random sampling and proper statistical analysis wich requires organisation and financial support. The analysis showed that as many as 58 per cent of the subjects had their total cholesterol values above the upper reference limit for Slovenia, as defined in 1987 (5,7 mmoUL). The results were analysed also according to the criteria of the Yugoslav Lipid Committee ( 1 ) and the European Atherosclerosis Society (2, 3, 4). By these standards only 22,7 per cent of the study population had their total cholesterol and triglyceride levels within the desired range, and even within this segment, nearly a fifth of the subjects had very hazardous HDL cholesterol values. A comparison of the present results with those of otherstudies currently going on in Slovenia (project MONICA and CINDI) would previde a more complete picture of the lipid status for the population of Ljubljana, its surroundings and the entire Slovenia.
