Abstract     The metabolic syndrome consists of several physical and laboratory characteristics known risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. The metabolic syndrome is defined as having at least three out of five characteristics: 1. waist circumference in men above 102 cm, in women above 88 cm, 2. triglycerides equal or above 1.7 mmol/l, 3. HDL in men below 1.0 mmol/l, in women below 1.3 mmol/l, 4. blood pressure equal or above 130 mmHg systolic or equal or above 85 mmHg diastolic, 5. fasting blood glucose concentration equal or above 6.1 mmol/l. A therapeutic lifestyle changes should be encouraged in all patients with the metabolic syndrome. Reduced intake of calories, reduced simple carbohydrate and saturated fat intake should be emphasized together with encouragement of aerobic physical activities and body weight management. If the goals are not achieved, drug therapy should be initiated focusing on dyslipidemia, arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus and antiplatellet drugs. A new definition of the metabolic syndrome consists of simple and easily accessible procedures. Therefore, the goal of the whole medical system should be intensive screening of the population and a widespread identification of patients with the metabolic syndrome. A treatment of these patients should be intensified, thus resulting in a reduced rate of cardiovascular diseases and in a prevention of diabetes mellitus type 2. A multifactorial approach keeps away many of the diseases.
