Abstract     Due to many obstacles, patients' adherence to the treatment of diabetes mellitus type 2 is not optimal. Adherence is influenced by various variables. Patients' views and opinions are especially important. They can be studied by qualitative studies. The article shortly explains qualitative methodology. The patients with DMtype 2 have different attitudes to advised treatment. An importance of the diet seems well understood, but strict adherence to the diet is difficult, because it interferes with patients' social life and demands constant renounciation. Adjustment to regular taking pills is possible but patients are afraid of harmful effects of pills. The trust into doctors' decisions is of paramount importance for patients on insulin therapy. Many obstacles exžst for a regular physical activity. Patients lack contact with the body during their treatment and they state that they don't feel the disease. The communication and relationship with the doctor and the patients' knowledge about the disease are very important for good adherence to their treatment. An additional research is needed for identifying the obstacles and improving the adherence to the treatment of DM type 2.
