Abstract     90% of diabetes patients suffer from the type 2 illness. That is why most of the diabetes patients, who need help of the community nurse, are elderly people. Lack of body and intellectual functions, loneliness and often unsuitable living conditions are hindernesses, which make things difficult for the patient when trying to control the illness on the level that enables proper quality of life, late occurance of complications and longer survival in the domestic environment. Based on the integral treatment of the patient, taking into consideration health status, intelectual and character particulars, as well as domestic environmental conditions, the community nurse offers the support to the patient in forming adequate relation to the illness and in achieving the optimum level of the indenpendance. Additionally to health education, the community nurse executes a number of nursing interventions, which are determined by diabetes, accompanying illnesses and, first of all, occurance of complications. Broad expert knowledge, co-acting with other health care participants, incorporating patient's relatives into his/her treatment, but in particular good acquaintance with the patient and mutual trust, are the key elements of successful professional work. This results in well guided patient and professionally satisfied community nurse.
