Abstract     An assessment of a small-fibre function was made with a thermotest (Marstock method) in healthy volunteers, diabetic patients without symptomatic neuropathy and diabetic patients with symptomatic neuropathy. Thermal thresholds in both groups of diabetic patients significantly differed from thermal thresholds measured in healthy volunteers. Significant differences were also found between the two groups of diabetics. Disorders of small fibre function found in diabetic patients without symptomatic neuropathy indicates the presence of subclinical neuropathy.
