Abstract     Background. This article describes some sociomedical uspecrs of drug abuse and the responses that must be undertaken to control drug abuse related problems in Slovenia. Conclusions. The legal and illegal drug abuse needs to be tackled at the community level. An integrated approach that combines medical psychological, social and other interventions to treat high-risk individuals, their families and communities and to mobilize local communities should be used. Physicians and other primary health care workers have a key role in such efforts. Other sectors and levels, including self help, voluntary, social welfare and specialised activities are important. Cleare national drug policy supported by political will, improvement of the drug prevention and treatment infrastructure, and elaborate government strategy are needed.
