Abstract     Background The research "Youth nad their Attitudes Towards Alcohol" was conducted on representative sample of Slovene secondary school pupils (1310 persons; average age: 15.9 years) in November, 1990, to discover attitudes towards drinking alcohol beverages, drinking habits, drinking motives, existence of alcohol abuse in their families, and their smoking habits. Methods: The research study on a representative sample of 1310 Slovene secondary school pupils was carried out in November 1990 by means of a questionnaire, listing 55 questions. The questions referred to the attitudes which were the subject of the research, to habits and to the presence of those habits in their surroundings. Results. We found out that 95 per cent of subjects had some experience with drinking alcohol. Fifty percent of subjects drank alcohol for the very first time at their homes, while 18.5 per cent of subjects stated that they didn't drink alcohol. We found our some differences related to the sex of subjects (drinking habits and drinking level selfesteem). In the period between 1st and 3rd grade certain drinking habits become stronger. There were 42 per cent persons in the sample who had never tried to smoke. There were 82.1 per cent nonsmokers among 1st grade pupils and 72.2 per cent nonsmokers among 3rd grade pupils. Conclusions: The results show that preventive actions with youngsters should be started before the age of ten. The programmes should enclose parents and teachers, while special atention should be paid to boys.
