Abstract     The capacities of memory are interrelated with all other mental abilities and have a significant impact on the mental efficiency and quality of life. This concerns a very complex mental area which is extremely sensitive and reacts quickly to all the changes of the psycho-physical condition. The disturbances of memory are the most frequent consequence of brain injuries. Their scope, intensity and dynamics depend on numerous factors). In the rehabilitation programs after the brain injury the memory capacities have double meaning. They belong to the areas affected by the injury, thus being the subject of the treahnent, at the same time the memory capacities are those that enable rehabilitation (learning of new behaviour patterns). The improvement of memory capacities may take several years after the brain injury. A better effect of the affected memory capacities may be achieved through target programs for their encouragement. Such programs should be planned on the individual basis. The program starts with the areas necessary for a general orientation, and continue within the areas that increase independence for personal care, and gradually towards the most fields of life.
