Abstract     In this diploma work are represented Idrija Mercury Mine in closing and Mežica Lead and Zinc Mine in closing. Represented are histories of both mines, their production and the reasons for closing them. Described is technology of excavation and technological process acquiring of ore. The work also conteins the information about metal characteristics (arsenic, zinc, cadmium, lead and mercury) and their effects on environment and human organism. Included are the problems of hazardous waste from the mines and the pollution of Idrija and Meža Valley with heavy metals. The population of Idrija and Meža Valley have been exposed to pollution of their working as well as their living environment for at least 500 years. Intensity of producing mercury and lead has increased in the last centuries, considerably therefore has been increased exposure of the workers and all residents to harmful effects of mercury and lead. At the same time has been increase health control in the last 100 years. Hazardous waste from mines remained from the past centuries excavation are in tailing. Tailing has been used for filling up the tunnels or has been deposited on the tailing deposits. The other hazardous waste are created by the recasting of mercury and lead, which are not mines waste anymore. The sources of the pollution have been eliminated therefore our task now is to provide the best conditions we can for living in areas which have been most polluted. In all this years of excavation a huge amount of tailing has accumulated. Now we have the problem, how to safely and environment friendly store or distroy this huge amount of tailing.
