Abstract     The present study was carried out in the group of 70 women at a mean age of 51,3 years (range 45-55 years). All of them had more or less climacteric symptoms; flushing, sweating, insomnia, nervousness, myalgia, palpitations, ear buzzing and parasthesia. The patients were given a series of acupuncture twice a week, during the period of five weeks in order to diminish the climacteric symptoms. Patients included in the study had never received the hormone replacement therapy, or they stopped it at least one month before attending the study. The purpose of this study was to verify the favourable action of acupuncture in the vasomotoric and psychic manifestacions of the climacterium. Symptom severty was evaluated by Kupperman's index(K.I*) wic we checked four times: at the begining of the treatment, when the treatment was accomplished, six weeks and twelve weeks later. Acupuncture induced a statistically significant reduction of the climacteric symptomatology (p less th. 0,01), analyzed with student's t-test for paired data. When the treatment was accomplished there were 76 per cent of patients in wich a total number of K.I.* ranged from 0-15 that was considered an efficatious therapeutic regimen. Climacteric symptoms were significantly milder even three months after the last acupuncture (p less th. 0,01). We therefore consider that acupuncture is an effective method for the treatment of climacteric troubles. It is especaly convenient for women who have contraindicatios for hormone replacment therapy and those who dislike it.
