Abstract     Multidisciplinary wound healing appro ach with clinical pathways is the optimal way to improve prophylaxis and treatment of patients with different problem wounds. It has resulted in improved healing rates in patients with wounds, decreased rates of major amputations and provided better opportunities for basic and clinical research. It is important to identify the major mechanisms influencing wound healing and factors associated with impaired wound healing, to have knowledge of different types of wound closure and their application and also of different phases of wound healing and the role of the inflammatory process. Removal of necrotic tissue from the wound bed is called debridement or necrectomy and is considered necessary for wound healing. There are four methods of debridement: surgical, mechanical, enzymatic and autolytic.
