Abstract     The cutaneous mycoses are fungal infections of the epidermis and dermis that evoke an inflammatory reaction in the host. whereas supeficial mycoses only involve stratum corneum. However, a variety of pathological changes occur in the host because of the presence of the infectious agent and / or its metabolic products. Fungal infections of the skin, hair and nails are some of the commonest infections in humanity and are a health concern worldwide. Whereas some infections are almost unsightly, others may cause significant morbidity. especially in the elderly and those with significant illness or immune compromise. Some forms of dermatomycosis are increasing in incidence. whereas others remain rare. Although clinical appearance may be typical in some cases, laboratory confirmation should always be performed. In recent years very active and successful antifungat drug have been developed. Although newer oral antifungals have significantly affected the efficacy and rapidity of treatment of many fungal infections, side effects. drug interactions and resistant organisms have created a challenge to find safer and more effective treatments.
