Abstract     Food-borne diseases are significant health problem with major health and economic effects. The number of food-borne diseases is increasing in the developed and developing countries. The reason is better identification of micro-organisms and better reporting and also the increasing incidence of known agents (Salmonella Enterica) and emerging ones (Campylobacter spp., norovirus), some of them very virulent (E.coli 0157:H7). In Slovenia the incidence of salmonellosis is increasing in the last few years especially in the year 2002 in which the highest incidence in the last ten years was reported. Salmonella was identified in 25 foodborne outbreaks investigated this year. A more active surveillance system supported with molecular laboratory investigation which could provide more precise estimation of the burden od salmonellosis, should be implemented in Slovenia.
