Abstract     The segment of safety and health in the workplace is given a great decrl of consideration in the European Union as well as other developed countries. The responsibility for this segment lies moslly on the employers who have to ensure and, finance the legally reguired measures of safety and health in the workplace. In Slovenia, this area is regulated by a separate law. However, the current situation is still not satisfying. Mostly the financing of the conseguences from not following and properly implementing the safety at work is not consistent with the European practice. The majority of costs dealing with health care services, the rehabilitation of work-related injuries and reinbursements related to these risks are covered by the social insurance and only a small portion of these costs are covered by the employers, Therefore, a proposal to create a separate insurance for work-related injuries and workrelated illnesses has been made, This insurance would constitute a new branch of social security with separate resources and management bodies. The insurance would be financed by employers. The proposal also includes the introduction of differentiated contribution rates for employers, related to the ammount of risk as well as bonus system which would economically encourage the employers to properly implement the reguired measures and activities related to the safety and health in the work place. The first step in this direction is supposed to be the introduction of differentiated contribution rates for work related injuries and illnesses within Pension Fund and Health Insurance Institute.
