Abstract     Background. The age of 915 subjects who completed the survey ranged between 60 and 101 years, with a mean age of 80.5 years. According to medical evaluations most of them had chronic illness. Heart diseases, hypertension and diabetes were the more frequent health problems encountered in both the male and female population. Mean values of the weight/height indices and peripheral skinfolds were higher in females, if compared with males. Most indices of obesity were signifcantly higher in men and women who were semi-mobile, mobile or healthy persons, if compared with those who were very ill and immobile. Some indices of obesity were significantly higher or lower for subjects who were ill, if compared to those who were healthy. However, all indices of obesity (skinfold thickness) were significantly higher for women who had normal hearing, compared to those who were deaf or hard of hearing. The sight ability had no influence (either with men or with women). In general it can be ascertained that numerous chronic diseases are connected with lower thickness indices, with the exception of diabetes, hypertension, heart- and endocrine glands (only with the male population) diseases, where the higher thickness index was observed. Due to poor appetite, illness, medicine consumption and physical inactivity, older patients have a signifcantly unfavourable thickness index, if compared wirh healthy subjects. A good psychological condition can positively influence the energetic status of the patient, in spite of his chronic diseases.
