Abstract     Background. According to data from the Cancer Register of Slovenia, the incidence of cancer of the mouth, oropharynx, hypopharynx throat and colon cancer incidence was increasing most steeply among all types of male cancer during the period 1978-1987. Methods. Published and unpublished data from the Cancer Register of Slovenia concerning cancer of the tongue, gums, floor of mouth, and other parts of mouth, oropharynx, hypopharynx, the unmarked part of the pharynx, and the throat were analysed. Results. At diagnosis most patients (44 per cent ) are aged 50-59 years. At this age the incidence increase is greatest (the average annual percentage change is 5.7 per cent ). Cohort analysis indicates that the younger generations are almost four times more affected than the older ones. The five-year crude survival of patients with the oral, oropharyngeal and hypopharyngeal cancer is not improving; for patients diagnosed in 1973 - 1976 it was 13 per cent and for those diagnosed in 1981 -1984 it was 14 per cent . In the former group the proportion of focalized srage was 20 per cent , while in the latter group it was only 14 per cent . Conclusions. Regarding the known common risk factors, smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, the possibilities for primary prevation are well-known but difficult to carry through. The general health service must therefore pay special attention to this increasing problem. Early detection is its responsibility.
