Abstract | Background. Every year 3 million people die throughout the world because of injuries and poisoning. They are the cause of 10 to 30 per cent of all hospitalizations. In Slovenia this percentage has been for a number of years in the range of around 10 per cent . In the article data on injuries in Slovenia are described for a ten-year period from 1979 to 1988. They were registered on all levels of the health care system and in the vital statistics for death cases. Results. One tenth of callers came to general and specialist clinics because of injuries. Also days of hospitalization due to injuries represent one tenth of the total number of haspital days. As cause of death injuries are on the third place of ten cardiovascular diseases and neoplasms. Conclusions. The most detailed are the data of hospitalized patients and the most complete is the register for people who died because of fatal injuries. The introduction of an integrated information system will be of great importance for the preparation of preventive plans and programs. It will enable better insight and understanding of the causes of injuries. Primary prevention is extremely problenmatic, demanding multidisciplinary and intersectional approaches. | |
