Abstract		The incidence of rectal cancer in Slovenia as well as in the developed world has raised within recent years. It is important to determine preoperatively the local stage and to ensure optimal therapy. In the preoperative staging of rectal cancer various diagnostic methods are used, and their accuracy is compared to the histopathologic stage. In our paper the intrarectal ultrasound is presented as a very accurate, relatively cheap and simple method of staging rectal cancer, when performed by an experienced examiner.
