Abstract     The relationship between twelve health-related attitudes and the use of psychoactive substances (PAS) was explored in Slovenian high school students. The sample was nationally representative in sex, age and highschool programs. This study is a component of a project, researching risk factors for health and socialization of Slovenian high-school students. A body of foreign research established the role and importance of attitudes in choosing a behavior such as use of PAS. Our study is the first of a kind in Slovenian high-school population. Self-administered standardized questionnaire was used for data collection on variety of topics, including behavioral components of twelve positive health-related attitudes, and lifetime and current use (past month) of five groups of PAS: alcohol, tobacco, psychotropic medication used in a non-medicinal way, cannabinoids and other illicit drugs. Profile analysis was performed using generalized linear modeling and generalized estimating equations (GLM/GEE) methodology. Important relationship between health-related attitudes and PAS-use was confirmed. However attitudes revealing hedonistic life orientation have the highest odds ratios (are the most important for good health). Past month tobacco users have similar profile of attitudes as non-users, whereas tobacco dependant students show similar profile as other drug users. Primary and secondary prevention and clinical work strategies for addressing adolescent PAS-use are supported by the results.
